Jordans Mill is a great place to see some wildlife, whilst relaxing with a drink or something to eat.

Kingfishers are almost daily visitors to the Milll, on quiet mornings one can often be seen fishing from the terrace in front of the glass screen. Usually seen as just a bright blue flash, their call is loud and high pitched. They sometimes hover before diving to catch small fish. Fish are stunned by banging them on a nearby perch. They catch “blind”, a third eyelid closes just before hitting the water.

Females have an orange tint to the lower part of the beak, Males are all black.

They nest in holes, digging a long narrow tunnel into river banks. Nesting starts in March or April, 2 – 3 broods are raised in the same nest.
