TOUR THE MILL

Please note, the Mill Tour is closed at the moment due to Covid-19. We are exploring ways of being able to re-open, please keep your eyes peeled for updates!

At Jordans Mill you can step back in time in our historic flour Mill, home to the Jordan family for over 150 years, and see first-hand how flour was once produced here.

Lovingly restored having stopped milling in 2000, the 19th Century Mill has been divided in two by a spectacular floor-to-ceiling glass screen, with the working part of the Mill on one side and a contemporary display area on the other.

Our knowledgeable and friendly tour guides, will take you on a fascinating tour of the Mill museum including a demonstration of the milling machinery and tales of the Jordan family’s journey from farming and milling to cereals.

Why not browse the Mill at your own leisure and try our new self-guided leaflet which takes you around the Mill museum, floor by floor, for just £2.50.

GUIDED MILL TOURS FOR CHILDREN

Guided Mill Tours are free for children under 16 and our interactive displays and exciting machinery mean that everyone, young and old, can enjoy learning about the Mill’s history. Please note that we may not always be able to run every tour.

MILL GARDENS

The Mill Gardens, Meadow and Woodland is open:

Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

We are also open Monday 3rd May (Bank Holiday)

The Mill Gardens are unique food and flower gardens where crops, vegetables and fruits are grown in an ornamental setting alongside wild flowers and cultivated garden plants. Cereals such as oats, rye, wheat and barley are grown in rotation with other crops like potatoes, onions and cabbages, showcasing a number of farming techniques and the protection of wild life habitats.

Admission to our Mill Gardens is free and a stroll in our gardens will take you on a relaxing, enjoyable journey around our ornamental flower displays, cereal crops, orchard and allotment. You can then continue your journey through to our Mill Meadow and Woodland, havens for wildlife and great for budding explorers! Our gardens change through the seasons and look wonderful at any time of the year.

Want to learn more?

We have an unguided souvenir brochure available in the Mill shop for enquiring minds (£2.50 including discount vouchers). In the spring and summer months we will be running garden tours – look out for more information.

MILL GARDENS DESIGN

The Mill Gardens were designed by Chelsea Flower Show winners Ian Kitson and Julie Toll who took inspiration from ancient field layouts, hedge patterns and the flow of the River Ivel. Just as the Bedfordshire countryside is divided into fields by hedgerows, the different areas of our gardens are separated using yew hedging. A winding path, emulating the flow of the River Ivel, leads you through the Mill Gardens.

Our Mill Meadow teems with wildflowers in the summer and is grazed by our resident sheep in the winter. It’s a great place for younger visitors to let off steam and spot wildlife, or take a rest on one of our benches and enjoy the view. Next to the meadow, our woodland area is specially designed to attract wildlife with its woodpiles, birdboxes and even an insect hotel! Follow our log path through the trees, look out for our teepee and beehives, or have a go at the throw a cone game.

As the Mill Gardens, meadow and woodland shift and change with the seasons there is always something new to enjoy, and admission into the meadow and woodland, like our gardens, is free of charge.
