Our Head Gardeners have been busy building mini beasts, creating new flower and vegetable beds and maintaining our Gardens.

They always try to showcase a range of crops, from fruits and vegetables to cereals and flowers, many of which we use in our Riverside Café.

Here’s a few summer tips to help keep the garden in tip top condition – what to do now!

  • Dead heading to promote further flowers
  • Take relevant for cuttings for propagation
  • Sow spring cabbages – oriental greens
  • Remove lower tomatoes leaves to help ripen
  • Keep picking your crops

What’s looking good now in our garden

  • Tomatoes – 12 varieties including several heritage – have you seen our black tomatoes
  • Large non edible Oregano, which are attracting lots of bees and butterflies!
  • Flower of the year – Zinnia in our small cut flower bed

LATE SEPTEMBER OPENING FOR GARDENS

We're pleased to advise that construction work on Jordans Mill gardens is well underway and that we're hoping to have them open by late September. After the awful prolonged winter weather and a few other delays and set-backs, the team are doing an amazing job at getting this final part of the site open, even in the hot weather! Tonnes of top soil arrived last week and very quickly the soil mountain has been distributed to the right areas. The path is in place and it won't be long before planting is underway. We can't wait to be able to show you the beautiful, fitting work that Chelsea Flower Show gold winners Toll+Kitson have designed.

Summer treats at the Riverside Café

The Riverside Café is gearing up for the summer and has added some treats to the menu for visitors to enjoy.

You can now treat yourself to a luxury Maynard's Dairy Ice cream at Jordans Mill. Made locally in Dunton, you can choose from vanilla, strawberry, black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, fudge, mango fruit ice, lemon fruit ice and blackcurrant sorbet.

We have also teamed up with Maynards Dairy to create a delicious 'coconut and honey yoghurt with crunchy granola', which is delicious any time of day.

If it's too hot outside for your coffee fix, why not try it iced?

You will also notice that our drinks refrigerator is stocked up with some nice cold beers!

There's plenty of seating on our verandah over the River Ivel, or it's a bit cooler inside if you want a break from the sunshine.

‘HOLME-MADE’ LOAVES – THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD

Few pleasures in life beat smelling freshly baked bread first thing in the morning. Our breakfast visitors can now enjoy the aroma of our very own bread coming straight out of the oven everyday. The chefs are baking different varieties throughout the week, so that visitors can carry on enjoying Jordans Mill's food at home. They are now available to buy and take away from the Mill Store Shop but you have to be quick...they're going like hot cakes!

Swanning around the Mill

Our team have been very excited to watch a swan and her signets taking a daily paddle past the Riverside Cafe!  The decking over the River Ivel is a great spot for nature watching, while enjoying a cuppa.  We'd love to hear your stories of passing wildlife and see your photos via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/jordansmill or on Twitter @jordansmill.

Local Choral Society Rehearses in the Mill Store

We were very pleased to welcome one of our local choral societies, The Thursday Afternoon Group of Singers to Jordans Mill last week. They filled the Mill Store with glorious songs after enjoying an afternoon tea at the Riverside Cafe!

The Thursday Afternoon Group of Singers, who meet in St Peter’s RC Church in Biggleswade each week, decided to try out the acoustics  after one of its members was the first person to visit Jordans Mill. Member Sue thought that the venue would be a good place for a rehearsal following her visit.

The local group, which has been meeting for over five years, entertained visitors with a few Madrigals; a lovely treat on a sunny afternoon and totally unexpected for other visitors, who all seemed to enjoy the songs. Staff also came into the Mill Store to listen, as it’s not something we experience every day. We’re looking forward to welcoming the group back in the future and we hope they enjoyed their time with us.

The Thursday Afternoon Group of Singers sing songs from shows, songs to ‘make you smile’, along with a whole host of other songs. For more information, contact Judith Emmerson by email on Judith.emmerson@ntlworld.com

Jordans Mill Opens

The big day finally arrived and as we were about to unlock the doors at 9 am, we were greeted by two very friendly first customers, Susan Dutton and Rose Forbes. The sun shone down on us all day. Four tours filled up very quickly as we showed our first 40 visitors around the Flour Mill. Lots of families came over to the Riverside Cafe for a freshly cooked lunch or a snack and the sitting quickly filled up on the decking overlooking the River Ivel. It was great to see so many people taking advantage of the lovely spring weather.

Despite a delay in getting the phone lines ready to accept card payments a steady flow of guests arrived throughout the day and everyone was suitably impressed with the beautiful new building and the wide range of facilities available.

We are open every day from 9 am to 5 pm with four tours of the Flour Mill each day.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Welcome ‘Holme’ For Volunteers

Jordans Mill is owned by a charitable trust and we are looking for volunteers to provide vital support with the day-to-day running of the new mill attraction. Opening in Spring 2013, volunteers are needed for the mill building and gardens to help bring the original mill back to life and safeguard its future.

Many locals have had contact in one way or another with Jordans over the years, directly or indirectly, and I know that there are many stories to be told! We are looking for volunteers with a keen interest. Full training and support will be provided to successful applicants. Volunteer posts are open to anyone aged 16 and over.

We are looking for volunteers to be tour guides, stewards, gardeners, education assistants, archive support, machinery maintenance and oral history collectors and collators.

Please get in touch if you have got any time to offer!

Many thanks,

Helen Close, Volunteers’ Manager, Jordans Mill. Tel: 01767 316503
