It was good to see our Chelsea gold-winning garden designers Toll+Kitson overseeing the work on the gardens yesterday. As you can see the paths are all in place and earth is being moved around into all the right areas. The garden has been designed using ancient field layouts and hedge patterns. However, it's not been an easy task; you could compare it with building a roof garden as some of it is on concrete. Some areas only have 50cm of soil! What we've all had to be mindful of and patient about is that we're on an industrial site and once the weather turned for the better, it took time and special care to prepare the garden area. A special membrane has been placed underneath the soil to help.
The path you can see running through the site is based on the original flow of the River Ivel. Next, field hedges are going to be planted and raised corten steel gardens are going in before all the crops are sown. Although the gardens will be opening in the next few weeks, next spring we expect the gardens to really come to life with ornamental and crop plants, vegetables and fruit!
